5. Teaching License:

If your masters program is designed for those that are NOT already a licensed teacher your course work will include preparation classes and student teaching that meet licensure requirements of most states

Minnesota

This program is based out of Minnesota so after completing the courses you can take the state’s licensure exam to become a licensed teacher in Minnesota.

All Other States

You will receive an IR (instructional recommendation) to give to your home state’s Board of Education. This will show your home state you have completed an accredited teaching program. You then would need to satisfy the requirements of your state, which normally is to complete and pass your states licensing test in order to receive your teaching license. This program will meet most states licensure requirements (**NOTE: I recommend that before starting any teaching program to check with your state’s Board of Education to ensure this program will meet your state’s standards)

6. If my Master’s program requires student teaching do I have to find and set up my own student teaching in my home state?

You will choose a few schools that you are interested in, submit this to the placement coordinator and they will set up the student teaching practicum for you. They also will help coordinate and link to a mentor teacher that is licensed.

Extras:

Walden Master’s Program consists of mostly individual work with limited group work as they understand the difficulties of group work when completing a degree online. They also have staff the are easily accessible for any questions or support. (Ex: Professors have office hours just as in a traditional setting where you can speak with them). There are tools that you can access online 24/7 to assist you in competing your course work. (Ex: A writing center).

Note about the Post Baccalaureate Program:

Walden University offers a post baccalaureate teacher preparation program. This program is designed for those students that already have a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field
After completion of this program students are eligible for teaching licensure in the state of Minnesota or receive the necessary paper work (sometimes referred to as an instructional recommendation) to apply for licensure in their home state.

The Post Baccalaureate program also offers the option to continue into the Master’s program. Walden University estimates this would add about four months of coursework to the post baccalaureate program.
