Advice From A Middle School Teacher

I began teaching in 2008 and have found it to be a positive and rewarding experience.  Like many others, I chose to become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of our youth. If you are thinking about becoming a teacher and are considering Middle School Education here are a few things I have gained since beginning as a 8th grade Science Teacher.

The Pros to Middle School Education.

1. I am able to make a difference in the lives of the students through the teaching of my subject matter, but also as a role model. Some students will come to me for guidance and look to me for positive support. These truly are the most rewarding experiences.

Some of the Challenges of Middle School Education.

1. Unfortunately, the reality is that despite repeated effort you might not reach every student. It is important to use your time and energy wisely.
2. Classroom management has proven to be one of the most challenging aspects of the career. (Keeping students attention especially in early morning classes and the last class of the day, individual disruptions, and dealing with the transitions between classes)

Here is some advice I give to new teachers.

1. If rules are enforced consistently and students can get into a rhythm or schedule with your classroom procedures, then this will go a long way to avoiding unwanted behavior issues.
2. Regular parent contact (no matter the type of feedback you get) is essential. Regardless of the response received, that contact is important to help keep the students on track both academically and behaviorally.
3. I strongly encourage new teachers to get involved with the school through extracurricular activities. One of the easiest ways to do this is through clubs or athletics. I have been coaching since the outset of my teaching and I have found it to be very beneficial. Getting involved in after school activities allows you to interact with students outside of the regular classroom environment, gets you recognition among administrators and other staff members, and can serve to brake the year up to avoid burn out.

In Closing…

If you are considering choosing middle school education as a career I hope this information has been helpful to you. The profession of middle school education is a rewarding career that has it’s own unique challenges. At the end of the day as a middle school teacher I know I have helped educate the future of the nation. I have also been a positive support and role model to so many students at a time in their life that is considered one of the most challenging. If you think you have what it takes, I hope you consider Middle School Education.
