What you NEED TO KNOW:

1. Types of Master’s Programs offered:

a. Offer Master’s Program for the individual that already has a bachelors degree in education looking to further their educational training and careers.

b. Offers a Master’s Program for the individual that has a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field, looking to make a career change into teaching.

c. The Post Baccalaureate Program is for those that already have a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field and want to attain teacher certification, but do no want to attain a master’s degree in the process.

d. Graduate Intern Teaching Certification-for Pennsylvania residents only. This program is a six month course that will allow you to enter the teaching field with a temporary intern teaching certificate.

2. Admission Requirements

a.  Completed a Bachelor’s program from an accredited university

b.  Min GPA of 3.0

c.  Two letters of recommendation

d.  Official Transcripts

e.  Essay describing why interested in pursuing this degree

3.  Course Length

10 weeks – (quarter system)

Students can enter the program in either the fall or winter.

4. How many courses can I take at a time?

You can take two courses at a time

5. Teaching License/ Teacher Certification:

If your masters program is designed for those that are NOT already a licensed teacher, your course work will include preparation classes and student teaching that meet licensure requirements of most states

Pennsylvania

This program is based out of Pennsylvania so after completing the course you can take the Pennsylvania licensure exam to become a licensed teacher in Pennsylvania.

All Other States

Pennsylvania has reciprocity with 33 other states where after attaining your teaching certification through Pennsylvania you can become licensed in your home state. If your state is not one of the 33 states that have reciprocity you will need to check with your state’s Board of Education on requirements for Licensure.

6. Do I have to find and set up my own student teaching in my home state?

Yes, you will have to find a local school to complete your internship/practicum that will meet the requirements of the program; Drexel states that an advisor will guide you through this process.

Extras:

Drexel works on a quarter system, with breaks between each quarter. Drexel University’s School Education is ranked as one of the best graduate schools in 2007 by US New and World Report.

IMPORTANT to note: Depending on your BS or BA you may have to take a few undergraduate courses specific to education in order to be accepted into the program. You can contact a graduate advisor who will look at your transcript to determine if any additional classes are needed.
