Boston Teacher Residency Program

This program began in 2004, and is well known throughout the country as a successful 2nd career teacher program. Candidates are carefully selected to begin a year long residency program working side by side with a mentor teacher in Boston.

Training:

One year program includes:
-Intensive two month summer institute
-Four days a week in the classroom with a mentor teacher (during the academic year_
-One evening and one day a week taking classes which included master’s level course work and is described as “rigorous”

Support:

-After completion of this program participants receive ongoing support during their three year commitment
-Graduates benefit from targeted courses and seminars, expert induction coaching, placement in collaborative clusters within schools, and an active BTR alumni community.
-Assistance from an “Induction coach to provide support during the transition

Cost:

-Participants receive an automatic $10,000 loan to cover the cost of the program
(this can be paid back by teaching 3 yrs in Boston public schools- see below for more in)
-Receive a $11,800 stipend
-Eligibility for health care benefits.

What are the benefits?

After competing the one year programs participants earn:
-A Massachusetts Initial Teacher License
-A credit toward a dual license in special education or ESL
(this is to be completed the following year)
-A very fast track to a master’s degree and a teaching license

Paying back your loan:

After completing the one year program graduates are forgiven of 1/3 of their $10,000 student loan for every year they teach in Boston Public Schools.
( after three years the $10,000 loan would be completely forgiven)

Eligibility Requirements:

-A bachelor’s degree by the start of the program year for which you are applying
-U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
-Submit scores from the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) or indicate an anticipated future test date.

Locating a job after the completion of the program:

Their website states that BTR works closely with the Boston Public Schools to make sure each group of potential graduates matches to prospective hiring needs. They also report holding many jobs fairs exclusively for residents of the program.
